The ABC Science Collaborative Presents on Vaccines for Prevention

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we know that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective at preventing COVID-19, especially severe illness and death. Although safe and effective, there are a number of other factors to consider as we learn more about COVID-19 vaccines that are publically available.

On Monday, March 22, under the leadership of Drs. David Weber and Mike Smith, The ABC Science Collaborative presented a webinar on vaccinations. The discussion, which provided an open forum for questions from school administrators, faculty, and staff, helped provide insight on the different types of vaccines, the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines, and factors to consider when determining whether or not to pursue vaccination.

“Every day there are more and more data to help us understand how safe the (COVID-19) vaccines are.” Dr. Mike Smith. “In general, if you have the ability to receive vaccine, you should,” he said.

As more North Carolina schools return to in-person learning, it is important to note that vaccinations are an additional layer of safety to the fundamental measures of wearing a mask, socially distancing, and washing hands.

The ABC Science Collaborative aims to provide data to support school-specific decisions by sharing emerging science and providing an interpretation of what that means, especially as it relates to in-person learning.

Information about COVID-19 changes often and, therefore, it is important to emphasize that science-based recommendations are subject to change. Our 12 Principles for Safer Schools looks at what schools should do to stay prepared and updated as information changes.

Decisions about how to handle COVID-19 prevention in schools is ultimately the responsibility of each school or district and strategies and timing will vary from district to district. If you have specific questions about your school’s in-person learning plan, please contact your district or school leader.

Thank you for your role in protecting the health of your community.
